TRAVELLERS' CHOICE: Andrew and Susan Burrell with their award
A tiny Bed and Breakfast in a former jail and poor house has won one of the top accolades in the tourist trade – less than a year after it opened.
Any tourists sentenced to time at Millgate B and B in Masham, North Yorkshire, will be in the company of an elite, it’s been voted 23 out of the top 25 similar establishments in Europe and 15 in the top 25 in Britain, in the annual Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Awards.
It’s rated from reviews provided by visitors, and for Millgate they’ve raved, all 96 reviews classed the B and B as excellent with comments including “fantastic, relaxed and cosy”, “first class”, “excellent” and “Best B and B in 35 years of travel.”
Much of the praise is heaped on owners Sue and Andrew Burrell who only started the B and B so they could pay the mortgage after moving to Millgate.
“We originally moved in with our daughter and her family, but they left after six weeks and that’s when we decided we had no intention of moving again and converted the two top floor bedrooms for the B and B, “said Sue.
“And it’s been amazing, I just can’t believe we’ve been voted among the top B and B’s in Britain and Europe. We have worked extremely hard, but it hasn’t seemed like work, it’s more like having friends round. I love entertaining and we do try to make people feel at home, we make fresh bread every morning for breakfast and home made scones. We also make children and babies really welcome, offering babysitting, and Masham is such a wonderful town to see.”
Andrew, 60 and Sue 57, enjoy showing off their 500 year old house which also housed the town’s fire engine for 200 years. They kicked off the business last March with a national advertising campaign, and once a few visitors had been, they put reviews on Tripadvisor and it snowballed from there. They’ve had guests from all over the world and have an occupancy rate of 85 per cent, with present day visitors to the old jail and poor house desperate to return, some have booked to come back for a third time.
