ROCK legends The Who are performing Quadrophenia in the North-East as part of a national tour.

Original members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will be playing their 1973 album at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on June 20.

Quadrophenia was the band’s second rock opera, after Tommy, and features classic tracks including The Real Me, 5:15 and Love Reign o’er Me.

The film version starred a young Sting, Phil Daniels, Ray Winstone, Trevor Laird and Lesley Ash, following the story of a gang of young mods and their clashes with rival rockers in Brighton.

An arena spokesman said: “This new concert version, directed by Roger Daltrey, focuses on the original album and replaces the narrative used in previous stage versions with powerful imagery projected on an array of massive screens, designed to support, complement and propel the musical content of the work by setting it in the context of the history of the band.”

Zak Starkey, son of Beatles percussionist Ringo, is on drums, taking the place of the late Keith Moon, with Pino Palladino on bass instead of the late John Entwistle.

Guitarist Pete Townshend said: “We plan to close the show with a few of the really well-known anthems, and maybe some last minute surprises.

“These will be as much a surprise to me as to our audience because this is an area I tend to leave to Roger; he's very good at it.”

Tickets, cost £60-£70, go on sale at 9am on Friday and can be booked by calling or from 10am in person at the box office.
