A PAIR of North-East councillors have been shortlisted for a national award recognising their work in the community.

Stockton Borough Councillor David Harrington is up for the Online Councillor of the Year prize in the 2013 (CORR) C’llr Achievement Award organised by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) and the CCLA, which a specialist investment fund.

Councillor Shelagh (CORR) Marshall, of North Yorkshire County Council, has been shortlisted for the Age UK award.

The scheme aims to celebrate councillors who go over and above what is expected of them and make positive change to their community.

A panel of judges, including councillors and local government experts, will determine the overall winners of the 11 awards up for grabs at this year’s ceremony.

Awards include the Age UK Award, the Community Champion of the Year Award and the Bruce-Lockhart Member Scholarship, which includes a £10,000 bursary.

Dr Jonathan Carr-West, acting chief executive of LGiU, said: “Councillors can often represent the unsung heroes of their community so the awards provide a fantastic chance to celebrate their achievements. We would like to personally thank all those who took the time to make a nomination.”

The winners will be announced at the award ceremony on Monday, February 25.
