Snow causing problems, but thaw already underway across region

SEVERAL centimetres of snow covered North-East England and North Yorkshire overnight, but many lower-lying areas were reporting that a thaw was already under way this morning.

The rapid snowfall last night caught out many motorists and several routes in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors were impassable.

Northumbria Police advised against non-essential travel this morning.

But officers said a minor road in Gateshead was the only route in the force area that was closed due to drifting snow.
