ART created by pupils from 13 Catholic schools across the North-East is going on display at Durham Cathedral.

The Gospel Stories exhibition will feature work by more than 150 pupils from schools in the Hexham and Newcastle Catholic Partnership.

It will open in the Cathedral’s Galilee Chapel tomorrow (Tuesday, January 22) and run until Thursday, February 7.

The exhibition includes artworks in paint, textiles, ceramics, print and photography and reflects how the young artists have interpreted Biblical events, messages and themes.

Sara Crawshaw, director of the Partnership, said: “Through this exhibition students have had some very precious time with their Gospel and like numerous artists before them have found the Bible to be a source of enormous inspiration.”

Sophie McNay, from St Leonard’s Catholic School, in Durham City, said: “This is a great opportunity for me and it’s a real privilege to have my painting shown in Durham Cathedral.”

Sophie’s twin sister, Kate, said: “All my friends and family will be coming to see my art work and I am really excited about being seen as a serious artist.”

The schools involved are: Carmel College: A Catholic Academy, Darlington; Our Lady and St Bede RC School, Stockton; St Aidan’s Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre, Sunderland; St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy, Sunderland; St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Lanchester; St Bede’s Catholic School and Byron Sixth Form College, Peterlee; St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College: A Catholic Academy, Bishop Auckland; St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive School and Sixth Form College, Hebburn; St Leonard’s Catholic School, Durham City; St Michael’s RC School, Billingham; St Robert of Newminster Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Washington; St Thomas More RC Academy, North Shields; and The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, Hartlepool.
