A MAN who burgled his own father's home after he allowed him to stay has been given a 16 month jail sentence.

Carl Mann turned up at his father Anthony's flat in Norton, near Stockton, on June 16 last year and was taken in after claiming he had been thrown out of where he was living.

However the victim became suspicious when Mann began asking a number of questions about security at the flats.

He subsequently left the property, having been picked up by his daughter, but when he returned the following morning a glass panel in a door had been smashed and a television stolen.

A bag which he used to keep money in was also strewn over the floor, while clothes and drawers in the bedroom had been disturbed.

Police made a DNA match to Mann from blood found at the flat.

Duncan McReddie, for Mann, of Hartington Road, Stockton, who admitted burglary, said he felt a deep sense of shame and embarrassment.

He said the 29-year-old defendant had found work and was impressing his employer and there was a danger that if he went to jail his pattern of offending would continue.

However Judge Howard Crowson rejected his plea to suspend a jail sentence and jailed Mann for 16 months, stating that the burglary was a planned matter.
