A KIND hearted woman has provided a home for two stray dogs found wandering alone during freezing weather in a North East wood.

Jan Johnson, of Hazelmere, Spennymoor, found a male and female black labrador in the town’s Shaftoe Wood on Sunday, January 6.

Mrs Johnson, 50, took the two labradors to the Stray Aid Rescue Centre, Coxhoe, where staff treated an abscess on the male dog’s leg.

The animal shelter took in the dogs, which are thought to be roughly 12-years-old, for ten days to give their owners time to come forward.

The dog’s owners did not try to reclaim them and Jane Hart, a friend of Mrs Johnson, has re-homed the two labradors.

Psychiatric nurse Miss Hart, 37, of Thorpe Thewles, near Stockton-on-Tees, Teesside, took on the dogs on Tuesday (January 15) and has named them Billy and Biddy.

She said: “I have taken on rescue dogs for about 18-years and I offered these two a home and they’re lovely.

“I already had a golden Labrador bitch called Sheena and all three of them have got on as they are really easy going.

“I just want to give them some love and attention in the last years of their life.”

Mrs Johnson said she had contacted Miss Hart about the animals and said the dogs would be spoilt by their new owner.

John Bielby, centre manager at Stray Aid, said: “We were unable to trace the dog’s owners and so they have been successfully re-homed. It’s proved to be a very successful outcome.”
