Charles Bevis passes the Olympic Flame to Matthew Burdess
A SERVICE of thanksgiving for Olympic and Paralympic torchbearers will be held in Durham Cathedral this weekend (Saturday, January 19).
A Civic Service of Thanksgiving will take place at 11am on Saturday and County Durham’s torchbearers have been invited to attend.
Councillor Linda Marshall, chairman of Durham County Council, suggested staging the event, at which torchbearers will be given commemorative certificates.
Coun Marshall said: “This was a once-in-a-lifetime event that was both enjoyable and memorable for the torchbearers.
“I thought it would be wonderful to hold a Service of Thanksgiving to mark the occasion by presenting the torchbearers with a commemorative certificate.”
