SEVERE ice overnight with temperatures as low as -10 are expected to cause dangerous conditions for travellers today.

The problems are expected to be worst in North Yorkshire. A county council spokesman said: “Grit salt is not so effective at temperatures below -5, so road users are advised to take extra care, allow for extra journey times and to slow down in order to keep a distance from the car in front.”

Yesterday, problems were reported on the A19 from the A61 near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, to the A174 and A171 and across the moors towards the coast at Scarborough.

Six schools in North Yorkshire were closed because of snow, including Sowerby Primary School, Lealholm Primary School, on the North York Moors; and Ingleby Greenhow Primary School, near Stokesley.
