TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of robbing a County Durham convenience store on New Year’s Day.

Money was stolen from tills at the Spar shop in the centre of Wolsingham, in Weardale, on Tuesday, January 1.

Four men, three with weapons including a knife, axe and baseball bat, are alleged to have entered the shop, in the market place, shortly before 8pm and demanded money from the tills.

They fled in a silver car that headed towards Tow Law. Two staff -a21-year-old man and 49-year-old woman - along with three customers, were in the store at the time and were said to be shaken but unhurt.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: “Police have arrested two males on suspicion of robbery.

“Both males have been released from custody on police bail without charge pending further enquiries.”
