POLICE have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else after the bodies of an elderly couple were found at their home.

The couple, who have not been formally named by police, were discovered by police at a house in Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

Officers were called to Biddlestone Road, in the Heaton area at around 7pm after neighbours became concerned about the couple.

Northumbria Police said the deaths were currently being treated as "unexplained" and inquiries are continuing.

A force spokesperson said: "The post mortems have now been completed and as a result of the initial findings police are not looking for any third party in connection with the deaths.

"However, further forensic tests are required to establish the precise causes of death".

Police brought in gas engineers after discovering the bodies, but a gas leak has been ruled out as a cause of death.

A spokesman for the company said: "Northern Gas can confirm engineers were called to an address in Biddlestone Road in Heaton after receiving a call from Northumbria Police.

"The gas supply was checked and found to be in good working order".
