ALCOHOL has been seized from underage drinkers after concerns were raised by residents.

Durham County Council’s neighbourhood wardens took the alcohol from the youngsters in and around the Daisy Fields area of Spennymoor.

The operation in December was carried out after residents raised concerns about the issue at a Police and Community Together (PACT) meeting.

The wardens were able to seize the alcohol using powers granted to them by Durham Constabulary.

Mark Farren, education and enforcement manager at the council, said: “Underage drinking is an issue that can be a cause of real concern for our communities.

“It can be very harmful for the young people and can create an environment that other residents dislike and fear.

“Our neighbourhood wardens worked with the police to help tackle this issue as is demonstrated by this recent action to seize alcohol from young people.”

Residents can report concerns or problems regarding underage drinking to Durham Constabulary on 101 or by attending a local PACT meeting.

People can report concerns about issues such as littering and dog fouling to their council neighbourhood wardens by calling 03000-261-000.
