POLICE have urged people not to leave windows and doors open in their homes because of the risk of burglaries.

Darlington Police said four of the last five domestic burglaries reported in the town occurred in houses that were not secure.

A police spokeswoman said: “Burglary figures in Darlington are reducing, but you can help to reduce them even more by making it difficult for opportunist thieves to gain access to your property.

“Please help us to make it more difficult for thieves, and protect your personal possessions by locking doors and windows.”

The police have also urged people to watch out for suspicious vehicles and report any unusual activity on the non-emergency 101 number.
