A TECHNOLOGY firm has got onto the right wavelength after landing a contract with a Scottish council which will see it install specialist radio equipment to 77 gritter vehicles.

Billingham-based Eemits, which supplies tailor-made communications systems, has signed a deal with South Lanarkshire Council to install cutting-edge mobile radios into its fleet of gritters.

The radios will enable drivers to communicate with each other, allowing them to provide a more efficient, safer service in an area which suffers from more snow than most other areas of the UK.

Gritter drivers, who are often required to access remote places, rely on up-to-date information in hostile and changeable weather. Two-way radio technology allows the council to cover the region, which has no mobile telephone network in parts.

The contract is the latest in a number of deals won by Eemits from outside the North East, with transport group Metrobus and NHS organisations among recent client wins for the firm.

Craig Matthews, managing director at Eemits, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to support such a great customer and ensure that the roads of South Lanarkshire will be safer for drivers this winter.

“The council was initially quite reluctant to use a supplier based so far away from them but I believe our quality, expertise and commitment to delivering on our promises shone through.”
