ALMOST 140 houses have been bulldozed as part of a multi-million pound revamp of an area of Stockton.

Today (MONDAY JANUARY 7) work started on the demolition of ten properties in Norton Road as part of the wider regeneration plans.

Already, 136 houses have been demolished on Swainby Road, Danby Road and Ayton Place.

The latest phase of works will leave 50 properites to be cleared out of a total of 186.

Stockton Council and Tristar Homes have been working with residents in the area and have been relocating householders since January 2010.

The council is currently in the tendering process for a development partner who will build new homes for sale and rent. It is expected to be appointed in the spring.

Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: "Stockton Council is committed to delivering an ambitious housing regeneration programme across the Borough as one way of working towards ensuring all residents can enjoy good quality housing.

"We have consulted with residents throughout the regeneration of the Swainby Road area and this latest phase of works is a further step towards the redevelopment of the area."

As well as the demolition work starting on Norton Road, Stockton Council is starting a ten-week programme of roadworks on Norton Road and Talbot Street. Diversions will be in operation and access to homes will be limited.
