A LOCAL history organisation is looking for people with memories of a locomotive works to come forward and share their stories.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the North Road Locomotive Works, in Darlington, staff at the Centre for Local Studies, based in Darlington Library, are looking for people who worked at or lived near the workshops.
The works opened in January 1863 and, in their heyday, employed more than 3,500 people, before closing down in 1966.
Staff at the local history centre are keen to hear from people who may have been employed at the works, who had family members who told stories about the workshops or people who lived in the North Road area and can remember the workers.
The works, which were situated on North Road where Morrison’s supermarket now stands, specialised in repairing railway engines.
Anyone with memories or photographs to share can call into Crown Street Library, call 01325-349630 or e-mail local.studies@darlington.gov.uk A small display of photographs from the Local Studies collection is on display in the library until the end of the month.
