A FORMER Lindisfarne star will headline a gig aimed at saving the North-East venue which became their musical home.

Singer-songwriter Steve Daggett will perform at the Save The City Hall gig, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of Newcastle City Hall.

The 85-year-old building is facing closure under council cuts.

The grade II-listed building, which seats more than 2,000 people, opened in 1927 and has hosted The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

Lindisfarne staged Christmas shows there for many years.

Last year, a blue plaque in memory of the band’s late singer Alan Hull was erected outside the venue.

Thousands of people have signed an online petition to save City Hall.

The concert will be staged at The Cluny, Lime Street, Ouseburn, Newcastle, on Sunday (January 6).

It will feature the launch of Save The City Hall, a fundraising CD including a previously unheard version of Alan Hull song All Fall Down recorded by Billy Bragg.

The concert will begin at 2pm. Tickets, including a free copy of the CD, are available by calling 0191-230-4474.

The CD can also be downloaded from iTunes or bought by mail order from: Road Goes on Forever Records, PO Box 109, Washington, Wearside.
