Police investigate robbery at market town store
POLICE are investigating a report of a robbery at a market town convenience store.
The alleged incident occurred shortly before 8pm on New Year's Day at the Spar shop in Wolsingham, Weardale, County Durham.
The shop was last night cordoned off and police forensic investigators were working at the scene.
A large number of police officers were in the area.
Inspector Jason Meecham, from Durham Police, said: “We are investigating reports of a robbery at the Spar in the market place in Wolsingham.
“Our investigations are at an early stage. There is no cause for alarm to the wider public.”
Insp Meecham declined to say whether the report was of an armed robbery.
A Wolsingham resident, who asked not to be named, said shop staff told of four masked attackers armed with axes entering the shop and taking the till.
“Staff were shocked but nobody was hurt,” she added.
