Organisers reveal more details about Durham Tees Valley Airport show

ORGANISERS behind plans to revive a popular air show after more than 20 years have revealed more details about the event.

The Friends of Durham Tees Valley Airport hope to stage an air show at the venue for the first since 1989, with displays from the Red Arrows, Tornado and Falcons Parachute demonstration teams.

The group, formed by 50 flying enthusiasts, are working with airport bosses to stage the event on Saturday, June 22, and say they hope to add flight schools and visits from aircraft from across the country to the show.

A spokesman said: “We are confident we will be able to provide a comprehensive static display, trial flights with resident flying schools, and a general aviation fly-in, which involves aircraft ranging from two-seater sport aircraft right through to the smaller business jets.

“There will also be several stalls including the Great North Air Ambulance and the Cleveland Police Air Unit, and most important of all, the flying displays and aerobatics.”

Colin Granton, chairman of Friends of Durham Tees Valley Airport, said he hoped the event could rival Sunderland International Air Show.

He said: “It will be massive for the area and everyone we speak to wants the air show back.

“It could certainly rival Sunderland, not on scale, but certainly on the impact visitors will get.

“The aircraft at Sunderland are there in high volume, but are also quite far away.

“This air show will have the planes, helicopters, and aerobatic teams flying past people at the same great speed, but they will be much closer.”
