POLICE are reminding people to keep their homes secure after a number of sneak-in burglaries in east Durham.

Over the last couple of days, someone has been trying door handles in different housing estates and entering houses which were unlocked in the Peterlee area.

A number of items have been stolen, including money, computers, handbags and on one occasion a vehicle, which was then found later.

This has happened four times over the last two days, during the night time, and early indications that it is the same person involved.

Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Coxon says: "With the crime rate going down, Peterlee is generally a very safe place, but opportunist thieves will take advantage of unlocked doors.

“We're reminding people to be vigilant and make sure their front and back doors are locked every night."

Residents who see anyone acting suspiciously are urged to contact 101.
