DURHAM University has commemorated the contribution of a long-standing friend by officially giving her name to the boardroom in its new Law School.

Anne Galbraith is a lawyer who was educated at Blyth Grammar School before progressing to Durham University (King’s College). She was a lay member of University Council for 12 years until 31 July 2012 and its Chairman for the last six of those years.

Following an academic career at Northumbria University Mrs Galbraith has pursued a distinguished career in public service. She is currently Chairman of the Valuation Tribunal Service and a non-executive member of the NHS Business Services Authority.

The Anne Galbraith boardroom is part of Durham University’s Law School, which is housed in a new £50m landmark development on the University’s Mountjoy (lower) site in Durham.

The room has been lined in cherry timber panelling, with a boardroom table and chairs to match. The room includes audio visual facilities and an informal area with views of the Cathedral and Mountjoy.

Mrs Galbraith said: “I feel honoured to have had such a long association with Durham University, which has been an important part of my life since I was a student at the University’s King’s College.

“I am thrilled and overwhelmed that the University has decided to mark the end of my chairmanship of University Council with such a generous and unexpected gesture.”

Professor Chris Higgins, vice-chancellor of Durham University, said: “Anne’s intellect, experience and passion for the University exemplify all that is best about Durham graduates.
