A NORTH Yorkshire nursery worker has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a child.

The 23-year-old woman was detained following an alleged incident at the Kaleidoscope Nursery in The Groves, York, North Yorkshire Police confirmed.

In a statement, the force said: "North Yorkshire Police can confirm that a 23-year-old woman has been arrested following an allegation of assault at Kaleidoscope Nursery in the Groves area of York.

"The woman has been released on police bail as inquiries into the incident continue."

Kaleidoscope confirmed a member of staff was suspended after its safeguarding procedures were applied. Parents using the nursery have been informed by letter.

The statement said: "The incident in question is currently the subject of a police investigation and we are unable to comment further.

"We are working closely with all relevant agencies including the police and the local authority.

"We take our safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously and the well-being of the children in our care is of paramount concern."
