THREE teenagers have been arrested and bailed after a 69-year-old man was assaulted with a bottle.

The attack took place on Friday at 9.45pm outside the back of a house in Plover Lodge in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street.

The man was hit over the head with a bottle, causing facial injuries.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and released after treatment.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “There was a group of youths seen in the area at the time of the incident and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“We would like anyone who was in the area at this time and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact officers.”

Three teenage boys, one aged 14 and two aged 16, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and bailed.
