A CHARITY is urging residents to tell it why local interest in the arts is so low.

East Durham Trust, which aims to regenerate the area , hopes the answers could help win funding for arts and culture development.

A recent survey revealed that the former coalfield area has one of the UK’s lowest rates of participation in the arts and the trust wants to find the reason.

Trust chief executive Malcolm Fallow said: “There could be various reasons why local people no longer feel connected to the arts, ranging from lack of opportunities on their doorstep to insufficient transport links to regional displays or performances.

“We hope that the survey will uncover local people’s views and opinions, helping to establish what can be done to reignite interest.”
