THE Supreme Court is to hand down its judgement today (Wednesday, November 21) after the Middlesbrough Roman Catholic Diocese appealed to overturn a ruling that it is responsible for an £8m compensation claim by child abuse victims.
The challenge relates to claims from 170 men who allege they were sexually and physically abused at the St Williams Children's Home, Market Weighton, East Yorkshire, between 1960 and 1992.
In December 2003, James Redmond Carragher, the former principal of the home was jailed for 14 years after he was found guilty of sexual offences against 22 boys.
He had served a seven-year sentence imposed in 1993 for indecent assaults, taking photographs of young boys and importing videos of mainly children from 1985 to 1992.
A spokesperson for the Diocese said last night: "The Diocese of Middlesbrough understands that the Supreme Court will hand down its judgement in regard to matters relating to the now closed St William’s Care Home, Market Weighton.
"The Diocese will issue a statement as soon as possible after the judgement is made public."
