A NEW parents’ support group staged a disability activity day for children at the weekend.
Sara Berry, who along with friend Jamie Knight formed the charity Smiles of Pride, held the event at the Great Lumley Methodist Church in Great Lumley, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.
Representatives of the Sunderland AFC’s Foundation of Light, Wear Mencap (Sunderland Gateway), and the North-East Autism Society were in attendance.
The day, attended by several families, was aimed at showing what the different charities have to offer for children with disabilities.
Miss Berry said: “Smiles of Pride is a support network for parents who have children with a range of disabilities.
“We held our first meeting a few months ago at Starbucks in Dalton Park, near Peterlee. Starbucks have done fundraising for the Foundation of Light.
“My five-year-old boy Jack, has severe autism. The Foundation of Light holds disability football sessions for children with various disabilities and Jack plays with them.”
Ms Knight is a loving mum to Jake, who has cerebral palsy and is profoundly deaf.
