A CHURCH known as the Pitmen’s Cathedral is to celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend.
St Hild and St Helen, in Dawdon, near Seaham will mark the milestone tomorrow (November 10) by holding an open day including parade of weddings though the ages.
The ‘Wedding Fashion Show’ will highlight the changes in weddings during the course of the church’s lifetime and will finish off with some of their more recent brides wearing their dresses again.
Other events at the open day will include a Victorian Christmas Fayre and a ‘Songs of Praise’ hymns performance.
The church earned the nickname the "Pitman’s Cathedral" due to its historically close association with the mining community.
The Victorian Christmas Fayre takes place tomorrow from 2pm from 4pm. The Wedding Fashion Show runs from 4.30pm to 5pm, and finally the Songs of Praise from about 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
