BISHOP Welby will continue his work in overhauling the banking system when he becomes Archbishop of Canterbury, it has been confirmed.

The Right Reverend Justin Welby, a highly experienced and intelligent former oil industry financier, was appointed to the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards in July.

Andrew Tyrie, its chairman, today (November 8) said the Archbishop-to-be intended to remain on the inquiry until it produced its final report.

“I am delighted about that,” Mr Tyrie added.

Questions remain, however, over other work Bishop Welby has taken on in the past year.

He is patron of the Foundation for Jobs, which promotes employment opportunities for young people and is supported by The Northern Echo, and a member of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership’s heavyweight commission on the region’s economy; as well as being a vocal member of the House of Lords.

The Northern Echo hopes to discover more of Bishop Welby’s plans during an interview tomorrow.
