LABOUR politicians vying to become the next Middlesbrough MP have until lunchtime to throw their hat into the ring.

The deadline for self-nominated candidates closes today, with a clutch of hopefuls expected to put themselves forward.

No date has been set for the by-election, triggered by the death on October 13 of longserving MP Sir Stuart Bell.

A Labour hustings event is on Sunday, at which party members will make the selection.

Among those announcing their candidacy are Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy and regeneration, and former Middlesbrough resident Paul McGrath.

Mr McGrath, 53, lived in the town until his job with PD Ports was transferred to Hull six years ago. He lives in Beverley and is leader of the town council Labour group .

Mr McEwan, 46, has worked for the NHS in the Tees Valley for more than 13 years.

Liberal Democrats have become the first party to announce their candidate, with the selection of George Selmer.

He has pledged to focus on jobs and housing if he is elected.

A spokesman for the Conservative party said a candidate had not yet been identified.
