Labour Party

UNION leaders have been suggesting recently a return to Labour's socialist past is the only hope for the future. Some Labour backbenchers have even nodded in agreement.

It was those economic policies, a belief in nationalisation and high taxes which brought down Clement Attlee's government despite the huge majority achieved in 1945.

Harold Wilson (1964-70), and the Wilson/Callaghan government (1974-79), were also brought down by these disastrous policies, as well as their failure to curb excessive union power and the economic chaos it created.

The conflict of interests between the trade unions and the requirements of a successful economy has destroyed every Labour government.

Margaret Thatcher's victories of 1979, 83, and 87, brought the success of privatisation, low tax policies and trade union reform which, in effect, sent Labour to political purgatory.

Labour was saved by Mrs Thatcher's downfall, John Major's failure and by keeping a significant distance from union domination in favour of rational economies under John Smith and Tony Blair.

The concessions the party has since made to its trade union paymasters, the subsequent increase in strike action and the increasing demands of the trade unions for more money and power will almost certainly damage this Labour government.

Des More seems to miss the point of politics, what loses parties power is when they carry their doctrines to excess, with the Labour Party it's taxation and public services and the Conservative Party cutting taxes and public services with neither being able to strike a balance that keeps the majority of voters, the people who really matter, happy.

I don't agree with every policy the Conservatives put foward, they put foward what they feel is in the interest of the majority, who then vote accordingly.
If Labour/Tory/Lib Dem do not appeal, you tick an alternative box,it is as simple as that. Frustration that the majority do not tick the same box is understandable, however, it is democratic, after all, we are not communists.

I'm on holiday in Florida and just filled two supermarket trolleys for $200. Petrol is $4 a gallon (one third of the UK price). Neither The Tories or Labour have any idea of the way that they've taxed the country beyond what is acceptable. This has impacted upon a benefits driven society. Cut taxes to the bone, make idle layabouts either work or starve, hit crimininals hard - even for relatively trivial offences, bring an immediate halt to immigration and write to Brussels telling them that we are not sending any more cheques. That's my recipe for putting the country right.

David,

Have a nice holiday - on your return you'll be pleased to know that you're now part of a City Region! Not just any City Region...the Tyne & Wear City Region, another EU inspired tier of governance for hangers-on and wannabes, with not a hope of advancing our case.

It's all about the drip, drip, drip taking of power from sovereign nations back to our real leaders in Brussels.

What is wrong with this concept, historic Northumberland, Co. Durham (returned to cover from the Tyne to the Tees) and Yorkshire, each having unitary authorities (I'll concede...since we've now got them) and where policy cuts across boundaries we have quarterly board meetings rotating across each authority, whereby local MP's are invited to be present.

All those people are already on the payroll supposedly looking after our interests, so why invent all of these other concepts.

Above this we retain OneNorthEast and Yorkshire Forward as Regional Development Agencies.

All feed up the chain to Westminster.

Abolish completely the Government Office North East, North East Assembly, City Regions and all similar concepts and start to cut our cloth accordingly instead of creating more and more outlets to waste our decreasing available income.

Mr Tague - they could not possibly do any of that - that's common sense and when did anyone in authority ever use that?

Thanks Jim,

Just back from an amazing day in EPCOT. The only poor service - and it was dreadful - was in the World Showcase "United Kingdom" where the front desk staff were ENGLISH!!!!!!!!!!

Incidentally I like a great deal of what you say. Try to build on it please. We need a solution that binds us together but allows flexibility at the same time.

I never knew that Des (Derek More) was such a staunch Tory ? I agree with what he mostly states, but this government are 'socialist' in every sense of the word. They are not coming Derek, they are already here !
