A MAN was hauled to safety during a dramatic rescue on Tyneside tonight.
Shortly after 8.30pm, police received a number of calls saying that a man was sitting on the wrong side of the barriers on the Tyne Bridge.
A police officer and member of the public grabbed hold of the 41-year-old man, who was starting to lose consciousness, and held onto him until the fire brigade's rope rescue team arrived and brought him to safety.
The man, from Gateshead, was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where he was detained.
The bridge remained open to traffic throughout the incident.
