A SCHOOLBOY is fighting for his life after being struck by a car on his way home from school.

Joe Caven-Norris is in a critical condition in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough after suffering serious multiple injuries when he was hit by a BMW car.

The 12-year-old pupil at Laurence Jackson School, Guisborough, had just got off the school bus, at around 3.50pm on Thursday afternoon, when the accident happened.

The Great North Air Ambulance airlifted him to hospital with serious head and chest injuries.

Today his school was offering counselling to any student who has been affected by the horrific accident, especially those who were on the bus at the time.

Headteacher Tony Gavin said: "Joe is very highly thought of by everyone. His year group have really come together. They did a lap of honour for him after the sports day events, which was very poignant. They are already looking at ways of raising money in support of Joe and his family.

"The school is very much part of a close community and everyone is affected by the accident. We have organised counsellors to come into the school to offer help to any students or staff that need it."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC Matthew Simpson of the road policing unit at Cleveland Police on 01642-301552.
