A TEENAGER killed in a late- night car crash had just turned 18 and wanted to join the police, his family has revealed.

Darren Lee Green was killed when his silver Peugeot 106 landed on its roof after a collision with a Vauxhall Combi security van on the A178 Tees Road, near Seaton Carew, Teesside.

The 18-year-old A-level student, who lived with his family in Hartlepool, died at the scene.

The collision occurred outside the Mayfair Centre, shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

Darren was studying at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, where he was described as an extremely popular student.

A member of the family said: "Darren was a wonderful son. He was taking his A-levels and had hoped to become a police officer. He turned 18 just last month.

"He was a keen skateboarder and was very good at karate. He was a very popular boy and will be sorely missed by all of his friends at the college.

"He was devoted to his girlfriend, Aleey. She and the whole family are devastated to lose him."

Andy Robinson, Cleveland Fire Brigade's watch manager at Hartlepool's Stranton Fire Station, said: "When we got there, the Peugeot was on its roof.

"The driver was removed from the vehicle. Together with paramedics, we treated him for 15 minutes until he was pronounced dead."

The van driver was given oxygen at the scene and taken to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, for a check-up, before being discharged.

The road was closed while the collision was investigated and debris cleared.

Darren was one of three children. His sister, Katie, is 15 and his brother, Karl, eight.

Witnesses to the collision, or anyone with information, are asked to contact PC Andrew Anderson, of Cleveland Police's road policing unit, on 01642-301552.

Police are investigating a separate accident in which a motorist lost control of his Ford Escort estate car on a roundabout near Redcar, east Cleveland, last Sunday.

The driver suffered a fractured lower back when the car crashed into a roadside sign.

The Escort was the only vehicle involved in the incident, which happened on the roundabout at the junction of the A1085 between the Trunk Road and West Coatham Lane.

Witnesses are asked to call 01642-301552.
