A male driver has died after his vehicle came off a country road and rolled into a ditch.

The man was flown to hospital by air ambulance with serious head injuries after the accident near Darlington today.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were all called to the incident on the road between Barton village and Darlington at 10.29am.

The driver, who was 35 and is thought to be a local man, had to be freed from his wrecked car, a Mazda MX5.

Emergency personnel tended to him at the roadside, before a Great North Air Ambulance crew landed at the scene, at Willow Bridge Filling Station, near Newton Morrell, North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire police confirmed tonight that the man had died from his injuries. He has not yet been named.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact traffic constable Ged Smith on 0845-6060247.

The road was closed for a number of hours.
