Go-ahead given for film studio plan

PLANS to create a multi-million film studio in the North-East have been given the go-ahead.

The £192m complex, which could bring up to 2,400 jobs, is planned for a site at Dawdon, near Seaham in County Durham.

Easington District Council has this morning granted planning permission for the application by the Coolmore Estates consortium.

The 72-hectare development will include a film studio, two hotels and a specialist centre for training in film and TV production, linked to Sunderland University and East Durham College, which could accommodate up to 2,500 students.

Philip Moross, chairman of Coolmore Estates, said: "I am very pleased with the outcome. Our proposal has been met with overwhelming support throughout the consultation process."

Council leader Alan Napier added: "This is an exciting venture, not only for the district, but the region as a whole.

"It will not only put the spotlight on East Durham as a location for national and international film-making, but most importantly, bring a significant level of investment to the area."

Due to the scale of the development, a final decision now has to be made by Government Office North East.
