Diddy League 16th March 2008
At 8 o'clock on a chilly, wet Sunday morning, 27 young athletes from the Darlington Amateur Swimming Club Diddy League Team gathered outside the Dolphin Centre to board the bus to Newcastle City Baths to take part in the second round of the competition. Despite the weather the spirits were high as they all looked forward to what was going to be a tough test for these swimming stars of tomorrow.
For many of these swimmers this years Diddy League is their first taste of competitive swimming and a sharp introduction to just how good the swimmers from the surrounding clubs can be.
Throughout the morning there was magnificent commitment and team spirit from all the swimmers in what is a fast and frantic event. Several of the swimmers were filling gaps in the teams by swimming strokes that are not their first choice and unfortunately they were unable to enter a 9 year old boys team due to lack of numbers which cost valuable points. After a tough competition against very good clubs from around the Northumberland and Durham Area the overall team place was 6th.
The club coaches were there in force to organise the team and see first hand how the swimmers got on. Fiona Miller (Head Coach) said after the event "The Junior League is vital to the future of every swimming club as these are the swimmers that we want to develop and become the top squads representing our club in senior competition. I am tremendously proud of everyone of my swimmers today but there is much work to be done to support and develop these young athletes so that we can compete on equal terms with the best. We had an individual victory, some close second places and a relay event victory today but this is a team event and our aim for the future is to see us winning this league with pride and gaining promotion back into the first division as soon as possible. Well done to everyone who took part today and thank you to all our parents and supporters who cheered them on so magnificently".
