DARLINGTON AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB
Northumberland & Durham Counties BAGCAT Championships
Over the years Darlington Amateur Swimming Club has always presented strong swimmers in large numbers at the Northumberland and Durham Counties BAGCAT Championships. This year due to injury and sickness the numbers were few but they still managed to make a good impression and come back with some fabulous results.
Five young swimmers represented their club and the town at the Neptune Centre, Middlesbrough and performed well last weekend bringing a long series of galas to a conclusion.
Jake Cowton won a Bronze in the 100m Freestyle, a very close event with only 0.01 second separating him from a silver medal. He also won silver in the 100m Individual Medley, again a very close swim and made the final of the 200 m Breaststroke (one of his least favourite events.) These results, along with his performances at the first part of the Championships, brought his medal tally to four and placed him third overall in the Boys' 14 year old BAGCAT awards.
Helena Teague made finals in the 200m Individual Medley and the 200m Backcrawl. She swam the 400m Freestyle in a competition for the first time in over 2 years and is now placed seventh in the county at this event. Overall Helena managed Top 8 placings in five of her events and finished 9th overall in the Girls' 13 year old awards.
A young trio of boys from "A" squad - Jonathan Teague, Jake Brown and Kye Cowton all swam Personal Best times in several events. Jonathan was first reserve for the Boys' 11 years 100m Freestyle final and Kye and Jonathan achieved qualifying times for the North-East Regional Championships in the 200m Backcrawl and 100m Freestyle respectively.
DASC Head Coach, Fiona Miller, said, "It has been a long five weeks of County events with swimmers of all ages from the club competing to their full potential and producing medals and placings, which is good for them and lifts the club's profile in the region. This great club has been through a very difficult period over the last couple of years and I am determined to bring stability and pride back into Darlington swimming and diving. I am very proud of all the swimmers that competed at County level this year and I am looking forward to next year when we will see many more of our swimmers attending these events."
