Thursday evening's cup clash between the Redcar Bears and the Mildenhall Fen Tigers produced not only a 53-40 first leg victory for the home team but the bonus of a recommendation by the visitor's skipper Kaj Laukkanen to Bears boss Glyn Taylor of the potential of his 22-year-old compatriot Joni Keskinen.
Glyn contacted Joni's manager - the former Edinburgh Monarch Vesa Ylinen in Finland before the first heat at the South Tees Motorsport Park, agreed terms and on parade it was announced that Joni would make his debut on the evening of Thursday May 15th against the Stoke Potters in a Premier Trophy fixture.
Joni is also a team-mate of Kaj Luakkenen in the Swedish league with Indianera and has four racing machines in his stable. His acquisition by the Bears allows them to field a seven-man team having operated the rider replacement rule for Chris Kerr who broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg on March 30th.
