Redcar Bears
Triple-header for Redcar
A total of three speedway fixtures will be staged at the South Tees Motorsport Park this week with the Redcar 'TLS' Bears facing the Edinburgh Monarchs in the first Premier League match of the season on Thursday evening at 7.30pm with further racing on Saturday evening.
On Saturday the Redcar 'TLS' Bears take on the Sheffield 'Tigers' in the rescheduled Premier Trophy fixture following last Thursday's postponement. That match starts at 6pm and is followed at 7.30pm by the first Conference League clash of the season when the Redcar 'TLS/Simpson Racing UK' Cubs battle it out with the Buxton Hitmen.
The Edinburgh Monarchs arrive on Thursday evening with an exciting new spearhead. Thomas H. Jonasson is regarded as one of the brighest young prospects in world speedway. The 19-year-old Swede scored 10 points in the World Under-21 Final at Ostrow, Poland last season. Few riders outside of Eastern Europe can boast of double-figure scores at any Polish staging of the final. While American Ryan Fisher joins the Scottish side after experience with both Coventry and Oxford in the Elite League. One of the most flamboyant racers in the sport, Ryan has already been registering maximum scores in the new campaign. There will also be interest in the appearance of 20-year-old Australian Aaron Summers who has signed for the Redcar Cubs and will be parked in the home pits on the Saturday evening.
The Bears can boast an outstanding new prospect themselves in the shape of 21-year-old Aussie Ty Proctor. In just a few meetings on these shores he has proved a consistent scorer and moves to a heat leader role in the absence of Chris Kerr who broke a leg in two places at Scunthorpe Speedway recently.
Bears are boosted by the return from illness of James Grieves whose high-scoring potential will be essential in a match against his former club. A side issue will be the anticipated clashes between James and Monarch's William Lawson for the pride of being regarded as Scotland's number one speedway rider. When these two race on track - the sparks certainly fly!

The Sheffield Tigers look likely to be able to track Lee Smethills on Saturday evening after he suffered ligament damage a fortnight ago and had time out of the saddle for treatment.
Lee turned out for the Bears at the end of the 2006 season and will be potentially potent from a reserve berth. Another rider with a more than good record at the Motorpark circuit is Paul Cooper and his performance could be a deciding factor in Sheffield's ability to remain top of this regional group of the Premier Trophy.
