Redcar Bears boss slams critics

The Redcar Bears management team have replied firmly to E-mails received via their website enquiry address and to postings on the forum accusing Glyn Taylor of manipulating the events surrounding the downpour at the South Tees Motorpark speedway circuit on Friday evening which led to a postponement of the Premier Trophy match against Sheffield.

The false claim is that the meeting did not go ahead because the Redcar 'TLS' Bears were missing Chris Kerr through injury and James Grieves through illness. In fact the decision was taken by referee Jim McGregor in consultation with promoter Taylor and Bears' skipper Gary Havelock and judged on safety criteria. Stated the Redcar boss and former rider: 'I will not ask my team to tackle conditions that I would not have contemplated myself and I wasn't exactly a shrinking violet in my racing career.' Taylor has also requested that those who sent E-maills condemning him and also accusing him of pocketing the limited gate receipts on the night for his own narrow ends to make their home contact details available so that he may 'phone him and discuss the real facts.' It is estimated that the new club owner was at least £1,500 out of pocket on this occasion and this is the second postponement in a fortnight. Glyn also emphasised that the turnstile and office staff were briefed to refund money to any of the 50 fans who had just entered the circuit when the heavens opened. This is not the usual practice as fans are normally given re-admission at no cost for a subsequent fixture on a ticket issued.

A further comment was made in support of Glyn Taylor by the Bear's Director of Operation whose contact details are those published in the match-day programme and who fielded the original incoming communications: 'Perhaps nothing should amaze me after my years in the sport but the bile spewing out from I know is a minority of fans was unjustified considering how honest, open and hard-working Glyn is known to be. Also I am informed that these false rumours gained currency in the bar afterwards. Which leads me to wonder - who are worse those who are keen to jump to negative conclusions or those who believe the guff and repeat it? Incidentally Glyn is not divine and able to make the clouds deposit water on a speedway track at will and he is not Derren Brown in being able to mesmerise a strong-willed referee like Jim McGregor!' A fuller breakdown of the actual facts surrounding the decision to frustratingly postpone on the evening will appear in Taylor's editorial in the matchday programme for the Premier League match against the Edinburgh Monarchs next Thursday evening and it is likely that Gareth Rogers will address the fans before the parade to reinforce this and to guage the true level of support for the new boss among the majority of fans who are normally regarded as one of the most sporting and enthusiastic in Premier League Speedway.

The match with the Sheffield tigers has been rescheduled for next Saturday April 12th at 6pm as the first part of a double-header with a Conference League fixture between the Redcar TLS/Simpson Racing UK Cubs and the Buxton Hitmen to follow at 7.30pm Admission prices are adjusted on this occasion to £14 adults, £10 concessions, children aged 13 to 16 £2 and all children 12 and under will be admitted FREE. (Season tickets holders will pay £2). This for 30 heats of speedway action!
