Redcar Bears
Danish duo make matters sizzle
The Stoke Potters are looking to their new Danish signings Klaus Jakobsen and Jesper Kristiansen to bring home the bacon as part of a sizzling septet when they visit the South Tees Motorsport Park on Thursday night to face the Redcar 'TLS' Bears in the first Premier Trophy North home fixture of the new season. Tapes up at 7.30pm
Klaus and Jesper were personally recommended to the Staffordshire club by Denmark's team manager Jan Staechmann - himself a former Stoke Potter of long standing.
Stoke's pre-season planning was also boosted by the retention of Lee Complin who returned to the sport in season 2007 after a five-year absence and whose form was nothing short of sensational. Complin is elevated to club captain for the new campaign.
To add dimension to a strong top five the Potters welcome Argentinian heat leader Emiliano Sanchez whilst the bustling teenage star Ben Barker hopes to build further on the progress made in the Premier League with Stoke. There is also a sting in the tail as 2007 Cleveland Bays number one Mark 'Buzz' Burrows is listed at reserve and will certainly know the quickest way around the South Tees circuit. The team is completed by the consistent Barrie Evans.
For the Bears there is a fascinating brew of experience and youth. Top end strength is provided by former World Champion Gary Havelock and the 2007 'Rider of the Year' James Grieves. Snapping at the heels of the veteran campaigners in the top five are American favourite Chris Kerr, 17-year-old firebrand Josh Auty and new signing Australian Ty Proctor who was second in his country's Under-21 Championship - beating many established British-based performers to his podium place. Arlo Bugeja returns to the Bears fold but this time at reserve where he will have a fairer chance to show his potential while Redcar have their own 'secret weapon' in the shape of Daniel Giffard at number seven. Daniel is recovered from an injury-strewn 2007 and mounted on very good equipment is determined to recapture the form that saw him voted 'Rider of the Year' in 2006.
