Foster's Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League
It’s first against second at Swalwell
IT'S too early in the season to
talk about crucial games but
the meeting of Swalwell and
Annfield Plain carries some
bearing on how each their respective
seasons may develop.
Defending champions Swalwell
have come flying out of
the blocks in defence of their
title and three consecutive victories
see them head the table
by a ten-point margin from second-
placed Plain. Richard
Hawthorne enjoyed a successful
debut for the leaders last
week, picking up both wickets
and runs, and looks a superb
acquisition.
Annfield are also delighted
with their Sri Lankan pro Lasith
Fernando and both are at
full-strength.
Shotley Bridge travel to Ashington
with a real quandry in
respect of Ed Rainsford, their
registered Zimbabwean professional.
Rainsford was about to leave
for England last week when he
was called up to play in a four
day game in his home country,
and it is understood he will not
now arrive until May 27 at the
earliest.
That will mean he misses another
four games and the club
may have to make a decision
whether or not that's soon
enough.
Dave Walker will continue in
the Bridge side in Rainsford's
absence whilst home club Ashington
welcome back allrounder
Stephen Boyd and
batsmen Greg Williams and
Ross Sample for the game at
Langwell Crescent.
In the battle of the new boys,
home side Ryton will start as
heavy favourites against Backworth
who have found life in
the top flight a very different
proposition to date.
The home team have turned
in some great displays in both
league and cup and look as
though they are equipped to
stay the course. Peter Moore
and Graham Rowell are missing
for the hosts today, with
Keith Morris and Dan Thompson
stepping in.
Benwell and Walbottle are
another who have made a poor
start with three defeats. A
home game with Lintz will further
test their resolve as the
visitors draft in brothers
Nathan and Jordan Clennell to
replace the missing Michael
Edmunds and Ryan McVitie.
Newcastle City entertain
Leadgate, the visitors in the
unaccustomed position of second
bottom. City have Sultan
Khan fit again and he will open
the bowling, and Leadgate have
Davie Anderson and Daniel
Stewart returning in place of
Dave Richardson and Craig
Burke.
A full-strength Tynedale
team make the treck to Sacriston
where the home side are
without Ian Pattison - Ben Hall
returns.
