WITH leaders Darlington sitting out the second part of the double programme in the Darlington Building Society NYSD Premier League Division One the leadership of the league was always going to pass into someone else's hands when yesterday's games took place.
And it was Barnard Castle who emerged on top of the pile as they pulled off a thrilling victory over Richmondshire. It was the Stanwix brothers, responsible for so much of Barney's success over the years, who were instrumental in the 15 run win. Mike top scored with 77 as Barney posted 189-9 in their fifty overs, and then Dave picked up four key wickets, including the last one, as Richmond edged towards their target.
Stokesley and Thornaby are now joint second, just one point behind the Castle as they both won convincingly. Stokesley consigned bottom club Darlington RA to more relegation worries as they won by seven wickets at Brinkburn Road, the stars being Clive Dowson (7-62) and Andrew Weighell (81no).
And for Thornaby it was even easier at Acklam Park as they trounced Middlesbrough by ten wickets - even though they had to chase down a score of 202 to do so.
Neil Coverdale (83no) and Ian Mc- Donald (89no) led the charge to victory.
Elsewhere Saltburn crashed to defeat at Normanby Hall to put them out of the picture for the moment, Seaton Carew also blew their chance to keep up the pressure on those above them as they lost by ten runs at Sedgefield and Wolviston hammered Yarm by eight wickets.
