“Its not just a basketball game” is Club Chief James Thomson’s motto and he doesn’t seem to tire of repeating it, although judging by the photos of TADEA Middlesbrough Lions last game at Eston Sports Academy, we can see what he means.
On top of watching top quality basketball in one of the best basketball venues in the country there is something for the whole family to enjoy with a ‘Kids Kit Dash’ and adults ‘£100 Half Court Shot’ to involve the spectators.
Last Sunday the TADEA Lions entertained American side Menwith Hill Cavaliers in front of well over 400 people as part of the clubs charity PRE Season is FREE Season promotion.
At half time two luck youngsters, Jessica Clarke, 4 and Matthew Beevis, 8 where drawn to enter the kids kit dash which involves them running from one end of the court to put on one of the TADEA Lions uniforms and with 7’1 players, keeping the items on is tricky work! Once dressed, the first to score is the winner. On this occasion and despite a good effort from Jessica, Matthew hit his third attempt to take the prize.
Next was the half court shot with Simon Cassidy being plucked from the draw. With the tension and pressure growing in front of the big crowd and £100 at stake, Mr Cassidy took his time and then some to ensure he got off the right shot. With match referee, Steve Lynas, checking he didn’t cross the line, Mr Cassidy was just short of the basket, although a big smile showed he had enjoyed his chance.
As the day was raising money for the ICU at James Cook Hospital, two of Lions stars; Leo Cassidy and Lithuanian Justinas Lasevicius had one minute to run into the crowd with donations buckets to see who could collect the most. Both players gave their all and raised over £80 between them with Leo edging the way just so slightly.
This Saturday will be the final opportunity to come and watch and maybes take part in the event as TADE Lions play Harrogate Raiders to Eston. The game begins at 2pm and spectators are asked to be seated by 3.30pm. Programmes are available for £1 but the game is FREE Entry. Donations to the charity are encouraged on the day.
