Middlesbrough Lions will entertain American side, Menwith Hill this Sunday at Eston Sports Academy. Tip off is at 4pm and spectators are encouraged to arrive before 3.30pm. The club are hoping for a big crowd to cheer on the Lions against a team of well drilled military personnel who will be physically and mentally strong. Menwith are travelling with a full squad of 12 including star players Dave Mackin and Kasim Cheatum. Cheatum plays at point guard and is a quick and strong player who controls the ball well and has an accurate shot from 3 point range. Both players have been watched by Middlesbrough scouts already this season and Mackin has impressed on a number of occasions. The 6’2” guard/small forward is a versatile player with many attributes. He has a good shot as well as a useful drive and his rebounding will provide a concern for Lions. Charlotte Evans will bring her team to Middlesbrough with one intention of winning the game.
Middlesbrough have other plans though and will be looking to capitalise on the absence of inspirational guard Charlie Fields who has had to return to the States for personal reasons. Lions are aware of the potential threats in the Menwith team, but unlike other games, this will be a fixture where Lions are the taller side and the effect players such as Ben Robinson, Lee Woolams and Rob Bryson have on the game will determine the outcome. If Lions taller trio can dominate the rebounds on defence and stamp an authority on offence they should fair better than their American visitors. Whilst the height advantage may favour Lions, the role of the guards is not to be under estimated. Menwith’s strength is in their guard positions and Lions will rely on the likes of Damian Warriner and Ryon Dixon to dilute these threats.
An interesting match up will be between the hard working small forwards; Michael Wassell of Lions and Juan Cervantes of Menwith.
