Nigel first home at Loftus

Paul Jefferson won the 60m sprint in the latest Gateshead Indoors Series race

The Loftus Poultry Run proved a popular attraction for Harriers' senior athletes before Christmas. The tough course in East Cleveland contains several off-road sections but always has a big field.

Nigel Wilkinson was first home for the club in 87th position with a time of 55 mins 8 secs for the seven-mile course. Next in was David Dodd in 106th place with 56:07, followed by Brian Hannah in 151st place with 58:31.

David Weston was 295th in 66:22, two places ahead of Jackie Nicholls, who crossed the line in 66:29. Brian Burdon was 331st in 68:07 and Joanne Tonkin was 341st in 69:03.

Louise Foster was 396th in 73:29 and Steve Dauber 414th in 74:55. Jeremy Shaw was 429th in 77:02 and Shirley Gibson 443rd in 78:57.

The race was won by GB international Steve Hepples in 41:50.

In one of the last races of 2007, Harriers ventured further south to Ripon for the Jolly Holly Jog 10k. The race was held on a new course that was mostly off-road and contained several steep and muddy sections.

One of the attractions, however, was a picturesque two miles around Studley Deer Park. Steve O'Neil was first home for the club in 35 mins 53 secs, an excellent time given the conditions.

Next was Graham Bell in 58th place with 42:20, closely followed by Nigel Wilkinson, who was two places and 19 seconds behind. David Dodd was 74th in 43:24 and Shirley Gibson was a veterans' winner in 50:19 for 181st place.

Emma Morley was 206th in 51:43, Brian Burdon 223rd in 52:29 and Steve Dauber 335th in 58:37.

The race was won by promising GB junior international Ricky Stevenson, of New Marske, in 31:38.

Earlier, three juniors took part in the Gateshead indoors series. Paul Jefferson won the 60m in 7.5 secs, with Harry Harris claiming second place in 7.6 secs and Sean Reid finishing 10th in 8.3 secs.
