Harriers' junior brigade showed some tremendous early-season form at the North-Eastern track and field championships at Gateshead last weekend.

Three who particularly stood out were Faye Bowles, Chris Gaffney and Lewis Moses. Leading U-17 competitor Faye raced to a tremendous sprint double.

She won the 100m in 12.54 secs ahead of third-played Lorna Goldsmith (12.72). And in the 200m she crossed the line in 25.77 secs ahead of third-placed Kate Blaylock (26.83).

Chris also enjoyed a memorable championships, triumphing in the U-17 men's 1500m in 4 mins 14.64 secs, with Paul Clifford fourth (4:18.08) and Josh Phillips ninth (4:26.63). Chris later came second in the 800m in 2:01.12, with Paul fourth (2:03.97 and Tom West fifth (2:08.26).

Lewis won an exciting men's 1500m race in a thrilling contest with Ricky Stevenson, of New Marske. Lewis crossed the line in 3:53.28 to complete a highly-satisfying couple of weeks.

Paul Jefferson was runner-up in the U-17 men's 100m (11.7 secs), with Harry Harris fourth, and Kate Blaylock was also a silver medallist in the U-17 women's 300m (47.56 secs). Kate also finished fifth in the 80m hurdles.

Another second-placer was Fiona Dewar in the U-13 girls' 800m in 2:39.95. Fiona was also third in the long jump (3.79m).

More third-placers were Abby Wilson in the U-20 women's 1500m (4:52.29) and Leah Kennedy in the U-17 women's high jump (1.50m). Leah was also seventh in the shot.

Jemma Archbold was fourth in the U-13 girls' 200m in 29.11 secs and finished in the same position in the 100m (14.25 secs). Tom West was fourth in the U-17 men's 400m (54.24 secs) and Zak Kibirige was fourth in the U-15 boys' 100m (12.69 secs).

Rosie Clarke was fifth in the U-17 women's 1500m (5:11.08) and sixth in the U-17 women's 800m (2:31.17).

On the roads, Harriers were well represented at the Tees Barrage 10k won by Thirsk's Gary Dunn in 32 mins 12 secs. Kevin Grainger was 34th in 40:05, a place ahead of triathlete Georgina Rutherford (40:16).

Ian Neill set a personal best of 42 mins 37 secs for 60th place and Sue Phillips was 71st in 43:23. Michaela McGarry was 108th in 45:02 and Ian Barnes 118th in 45:34.

Shirley Gibson was 127th in 46:19, Mark Milner 142nd in 47:11 and Annette Hubery 357th in 60:38.

Conditions were hot and humid for the second round of Black Sheep series in the form of the Ripon 10-mile race. A new off-road course proved extremely challenging, with several steppe hills.

Graham Bell came 40th in 70 mins 36 secs ahead of Linda Noble (74:45) and David Dodd (74:49). Shirley Gibson was 118th in 83:31 and Emma Morley 148th in 87:26.
