MARK Cavendish has been confirmed as part of the Great Britain team for next month's European Championships in Glasgow, but Geraint Thomas will not be involved.

British Cycling on Tuesday announced the names of the riders for the men's and women's road race and time trial events, after revealing an initial long-list last week that featured both Cavendish and Thomas.

And while the former remains included, Welshman Thomas, who has been leading the Tour de France, was not a part of the group announced on Tuesday. It is understood that he had opted against selection.

Cavendish is out of this year's Tour, without adding to his tally of 30 stage wins, after missing the time cut by more than half-an-hour on stage 11 last week.

Along with the Manxman, Wales' Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Dani Rowe is among the riders confirmed to contest the road races, which take place on August 5 for the women and August 12 for the men.

Alex Dowsett, Hayley Simmonds and Harry Tanfield will all take to the start line in the time trial events which take place on August 8.

Cavendish said on britishcycling.org.uk: "I'm looking forward to the European Championships and racing in a British jersey again.

"Glasgow is pretty special to me as it's where I won the National Road Race Championships in 2013 and the home-crowd support is always an amazing experience.

"I think we've got a strong team, I know the lads well from racing with them before and we'll give it our all on race day."
