IN a new feature we take a look at cycle shops in the area and speak with their owners. This week Steve Cowley of Cowley Cycles in Northallerton

What is the name of your store and where is it located?

Cowley Cycles, which is situated in Zetland Street, Northallerton town centre.

How did you start out?

Cowley Cycles has been established for 34 years as a family business. I have been at the front of it for 23 years, having started as a 12-year-old BMX rider. My parents use to take me to races all over the country, my dad having been a long-distance truck driver. My mum used to work in a transport cafe.

What do you sell?

We stock a large range of bikes from children's first bikes to premium road models, leisure hybrid bikes and E-bikes. Main brands are Giant, Trek, Dawes, Squish and Genesis.

What's the best piece of advice for a potential customer?

Buy a bike that suits your needs and take advantage of personal advice and service.

Where's the best place to ride near where you are?

We are fortunate to have locally lots of great locations locally, depending on the style of riding you prefer. Our rural roads are quiet and we have the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales on our doorstep for more challenging terrain. Off-road riders are spoilt for choice with Sutton Bank trail centre, Dalby Forest, Hamsterley Forest and Guisborough woods all within striking distance.

What's the next big thing in cycling?

E-bikes are the biggest new growth area. They are a new way to enjoy cycling for all ages and abilities, not just for older riders as some commonly think. E-bikes make the hills easier and help in headwinds, leaving you feeling a little more refreshed and encouraging you to go further and tackle more challenging terrain. The motor assistance is optional so you can just ride it like a normal bike when you feel tired.
