WE know how much you love the walks that feature in Country Life and this week we head to Swainby.
The village lies at the foot of the magnificent Cleveland Hills, at the north-western corner of the North York Moors National Park.
The surrounding area features traditional Yorkshire dry stone walls, hills, sheep, heather and moorland.
The village, eight miles north-east of Northallerton, is close to the ruins of Whorlton Castle and Swainby appears to have been built after it was abandoned.
The community expanded in the 19th century to accommodate miners working the hills for ironstone and jet.
Mark Reid has written 17 successful walking guidebooks, including the acclaimed ‘Inn Way’ and ‘Walking Weekends’ series covering all of the national parks of Northern England.
He is also a Mountain Leader and Outdoor Instructor and offers map reading courses, navigation skills weekends, guided walks and outdoor adventures in the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and beyond.
As always when venturing out for a country walk, make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing.
